Jay Baruchel Career
Jay Baruchel’s journey on screen began back in 1995 when he made his television debut on the Nickelodeon/YTV series Are You Afraid of the Dark?. He returned to the show for three more episodes in 1999 and 2000, marking the start of what would become a diverse acting career. From 1996 to 1998, he played Thomas Thompson on the Canadian series My Hometown, and not long after, he co-hosted Popular Mechanics for Kids alongside Elisha Cuthbert, who would later star in 24 and Happy Endings.
By the late ’90s, Jay had already started making his mark in films, appearing in Running Home and Who Gets the House? (1999). In 2000, he landed a small but memorable role as Vic Munoz, a die-hard Led Zeppelin fan, in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous. His breakout came soon after when he was cast as Steven Karp in Judd Apatow’s college comedy Undeclared. Though the show only ran for 17 episodes, it became a cult favorite, earning a spot on Entertainment Weekly’s list of “25 Best Cult TV Shows from the Past 25 Years.”
In 2002, Baruchel appeared alongside James Van Der Beek and Jessica Biel in The Rules of Attraction. Two years later, he starred as the lovable underdog Danger Barch in Million Dollar Baby, the Academy Award-winning drama that went on to gross more than $216 million worldwide. Around the same time, Jay kept busy on television, starring in The Stones (2004) and Just Legal (2005–2006), before taking on the title role in the quirky indie film I’m Reed Fish (2006).
The following years saw Baruchel take on a mix of comedic and dramatic roles. In 2007, he appeared in Knocked Up, Just Buried, and the short film Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse — which would later inspire the hit 2013 comedy This Is the End. He went on to star in Real Time, Tropic Thunder, and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008), followed by Fanboys, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, and The Trotsky (2009).
2010 was a huge year for Jay. He starred in the romantic comedy She’s Out of My League, played the young sorcerer Dave Stutler in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and voiced the beloved Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon — a role that became one of his career-defining performances. The film was a massive box office success, earning nearly $495 million, and its sequels — How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and The Hidden World (2019) — performed even better.
Beyond acting, Baruchel proved his talent behind the camera as well. He co-wrote and starred in the hockey comedy Goon (2011) with Evan Goldberg, and later co-wrote and directed its sequel, Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2017), with Jesse Chabot.
In the years that followed, Jay continued to balance acting, writing, and directing. In 2012, he appeared in The Watchmaker, Cosmopolis, and guest-starred in Being Human. He shared the screen with Kurt Russell in The Art of the Steal (2013) and took on a variety of projects in 2014, including directing an episode of Trailer Park Boys, appearing in RoboCop as Tom Pope, and starring in Don Peyote. From 2015 to 2017, he led the surreal comedy series Man Seeking Woman, which ran for three seasons and earned praise for its originality.
Baruchel’s later work included Lovesick (2016), guest spots on Letterkenny and The Magic School Bus Rides Again (2018), and starring roles in The Kindness of Strangers and Random Acts of Violence (2019). That same year, he joined Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins in The Moodys, playing Sean Moody Jr., further cementing his reputation as one of Canada’s most versatile and enduring talents.
